What is The Scarlet Letter by Nathanial Hawthorne known for?

You can use symbolism as a topic for ANY literary assignment. What I would do is choose a scene or a word that repeats itself. The most obvious symbol is the letter "A" sewn/pinned to her dress. I personally haven't read the book, but if there is evidence that the letter "A" can mean anything but "Adultery," you would have an awesome argument.
